Finally, we finally got Samsung's latest ultra-wide gaming monitor, Odyssey G9. This thing is definitely a beast. Although we have had the privilege of testing this type of display (ASUS VG43X) before, we are not prepared for the functions provided by the G9. This monitor is excellent in all respects. Not only is it equipped with a stunning futuristic aesthetic, it also provides speed and color accuracy that you would never expect from a screen of this size. The

Samsung G9 is a 49-inch ultra-wide screen gaming monitor with a 1000R curved VA panel, a 32: 9 aspect ratio, a 5120 x 1440 resolution, and a 240Hz refresh rate. Additionally, G9 is equipped with VRR support for AMD and Nvidia systems through adaptive sync technology.

as you wish. Samsung Odyssey G9 is packed in quite a beautiful box, showing the panel and some main functions. Inside, as always, the screen is wrapped in protective polystyrene foam and wrapped in a thin layer of foam padding. Inside the box, you will find that the monitor has been completely disassembled. The stand is divided into several parts, which need to be assembled and then connected to the monitor. Although you can do it yourself, it is much easier with the help of friends or family (actually suggested by Samsung).

The following sections will provide a deeper understanding of the overall design, build quality, and features of the Samsung Odyssey G9. Excluding the recently improved refresh rate, it will be interesting to see how the Samsung Odyssey G9 compares to other similarly priced ultra-wide displays, not to mention Samsung's older 49-inch iteration.

From a design point of view, this monitor is absolutely flawless. I mean, it looks like a hybrid of the Starship Enterprise and Iron Man armor, what more could you ask for? The humorous metaphor aside, this matter needs to be in place in terms of design, this doesn't even take into account the size of the matter.

In other words, the scale can be a good starting point; this is definitely huge. Not only is it over a meter wide, it is also over 400mm deep when attached to the stand, making it (easily) one of the largest monitors we've ever reviewed. Like the rest of this display design, the stand is elegant yet understated in shape and size. There are some subtle design features on the back of the screen that might bring it out well, but I'm not sure who it's aimed at, because you'll rarely see the back of this panel, unless you have a very custom setting. At the rear, you will see a scroll design around the top of the bracket. It houses the only RGB light zone on this monitor. In other words, it is one of the most unique RGB I have ever seen, and it looks very beautiful; unfortunately, you can't see it when you use it.

Overall, I think the overall impression of this monitor is futuristic. We like this.

Next is build quality, which is the area where the last monitor we tested performed well. Seeing as this monitor is on the shelves at a price of US $ 1,299, we expect the build quality to absolutely meet the requirements. Let's find out.

After using this monitor for a while, it's safe to say that in terms of build quality, I have two ideas. Before we talk about the negative, let's first talk about the positive.

Although most of this monitor is made of plastic, it feels very sturdy. The bracket is strong and easy to mount, as is the overall structure of the panel itself. When you take it out of the box, there is no bend or bend on the screen and it feels as solid as a rock. However, we will soon see that overall stability is my biggest concern for this panel.

More positive factors can be found in the quality of the input, all of which look good. The OSD controls are very easy to use and feel very good. In addition, the frame is one of the best I have ever seen.

It can be easily replaced with something more powerful.

The panel coating used for Samsung Odyssey G9 is anti-reflective and has a matt hardness of 3H. We see that this works well on a large number of current displays, which reflect ambient light very well. It also helps to lighten other reflective surfaces, helping you focus on the most important games.

When comparing Odyssey's bezels with ASUS ROG XG43V's bezels, they look thick. However, in reality, they are only 2 mm larger and 11 mm in size. On the other hand, the bottom border is much smaller than XG (4 mm to be precise), measuring 17 mm. Although I am not a big fan of "black bars", they are still not the worst I have ever seen, and they will not affect the viewing experience.

We have already mentioned the positive and negative characteristics of the scaffold in terms of build quality, but what we did not discuss is its function. In terms of ultra-wide displays, Odyssey G9 offers a lot of versatility in terms of adjustability.

When it comes to fit, users can expect the following:

is adjustable enough to find the perfect viewing position, if you can stop it. Although it doesn't offer much in the rotating department, if you're honest, you really don't need it. The function of the stand does not disappoint, it is true. The

input can be found on the rear of the panel and all cables must be plugged in vertically. Samsung Odyssey G9 is equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 HDMI 2.0, 2 DisplayPort 1.4 ports and 1 3.5mm audio jack, the perfect input combination for various types of gaming / workstation scenes.

Finally, Samsung G9 provides an absolutely exceptional display. Like Asus, Samsung chose the joystick method over the less functional and more annoying multi-button alternative.

Navigating the screen display couldn't be easier, just click the joystick and move it in the direction you want. It's that easy. To exit, simply click the left button until the menu closes.

In the menu, users have many customization options, including presets for color, brightness, contrast, refresh rate, VRR, adaptive sync, etc. This is one of the most comprehensive on-screen menus that I have been fortunate enough to use. And, as we'll learn soon, it stands out from the competition by not limiting the brightness in the color presets. Approved by this OSD.

Samsung has always been excellent at color accuracy and image clarity, so when we got the Odyssey G9, its high-end QLED display, it can be said with certainty that we expect great results.

The following results were collected using many different tests and special equipment.

When we received the Samsung G9, it was pre-calibrated to a custom setting and the brightness was much higher than the recommended 120 candela per square meter. Before we begin our color accuracy test, we make sure that each profile is set to the correct brightness of 120 cd / m².

In other words, the out-of-the-box settings are very good and show very accurate black and white depths. The 1900: 1 contrast ratio is a bit low, and the gamma (2.27) seems to be aiming for 2.3 instead of 2.2; this theme will continue in our tests. The average deltaE of 2.32 is very impressive for out-of-the-box testing, although not the best we have seen.

Then we continued to use the sRGB color preset, and as expected, it fully restored very good results. The 6701K white point and 0.0616 cd/m² black depth are very accurate, with an average deltaE of 1.81. The contrast is a bit low again, and the gamma (2.26) is closer to 2.3 than 2.2. In other words, the sRGB preset is one of the best presets we have tested, showing very accurate colors and good contrast. In addition, unlike most other panels we have tested, you can still freely change the brightness in sRGB, which has plagued us in the past when using alternatives.

The last one is FPS, which is a preset designed for first-person shooter games. It provides a high white point of 7420K, a good black depth of 0.0631 and a contrast ratio of 1917:1. The average deltaE is 2.25, while the measured value of Gamma is more reasonable, which is 2.22. Nevertheless, from a color accuracy point of view, the FPS profile gave us the worst experience among the three profiles we tested. In other words, it is still much more accurate than other VA panels.

After completing the initial preset color accuracy test, we quickly verified that the maximum brightness measured in custom mode was 396 cd / m². To start testing the brightness, we had to lower the brightness to 11. At the lowest brightness, we recorded 63.57 cd / m², which is quite good on larger stages.

When calibrating the monitor, we first load the custom profile and change the RGB to R-51, G-49, B-48, and reduce the brightness to 11 (120 cd / m²). After adjustment, we allow DisplayCal to calibrate the monitor and then save the configuration file. After completing the calibration process, we quickly checked the color gamut and then ran a more comprehensive test to understand how the calibration adjustments were made. The

white point is near perfect at 6495K, and the depth of black is the lowest value we recorded when testing this panel: 0.0456 cd / m². The contrast ratio has now risen well beyond Samsung's spec list (2500: 1), reaching a respectable 2635: 1. Interestingly, after the calibration process was completed, we still measured a high gamma reading of 2.29. .

We've tested it to make this monitor ideal for content creation and photo editing.

Panel Uniformity is a test we run to verify the brightness and color uniformity of the entire screen. During this test, the central square was used as the reference space. Then test every two squares to see how different it is from the reference. In an ideal world, we want each square to be green, which means that it does not exceed the difference threshold; we can set it at the beginning of the test.

Note: Results will vary from panel to panel.

A quick look at the uniformity of the panel - in brightness and color deviations - Samsung G9 performed well again. As you can see in the previous slide, almost all the parts are green (below the deviation limit we set). In other words, there are some differences in the surface of the screen, mainly in the corners, as you would expect.

One thing I noticed when I first opened this panel was that there was a considerable amount of backlight bleed in the corner. By performing this particular test, you can clearly see the bright spots around the edges. In other words, it is hardly noticeable when playing games or watching entertainment.

quickly concluded that the viewing angle is not the best feature of this monitor. Colors start to fade and darken at around 30 degrees, and color shift becomes a problem at these viewing angles. Unfortunately this is just one of the downsides to using vertically aligned panels, this is to be expected.

As mentioned above, as part of the calibration process, DisplayCal measures the volume and color gamut coverage of the screen. The following is the result of the Samsung Odyssey G9:

As you can see, the Samsung Odyssey G9 provides a large color gamut of 136.7% sRGB, 94.2obe RGB and 96.9IP3. From that volume point of view, the panel can display 99.8% of sRGB color gamut, 85.5% of Adobe RGB color gamut and 90.5% of DCIP3. This makes this monitor ideal for content creation scenarios, especially when using larger color gamuts such as DCIP3.

We often see monitors with 99% sRGB color gamut, even at the low end of the price range, not uncommon. However, what we usually don't see is the extensive coverage of Adobe RGB and DCIP3 spectrum. Thanks to the QLED technology used in this panel, G9 can cover more than 90% of the three main content creation areas. Although you might expect this on a monitor at this price point, it is still a huge advantage for this monitor.

Now that color accuracy and image clarity are unaffected, it's time to take a closer look at the overall performance of this huge display. I mean, in the final analysis, performance determines whether this panel is really good.

After calibrating the colors of the G9, the first thing we did was to load some games to see how fast it responds. Spoiler alert, we were not disappointed.

Before loading any games, I make sure to set the monitor to 240Hz and have the fastest response time. While increasing the resolution to 240hz, it was difficult for us to keep the monitor at full resolution, but by quickly checking the screen, we quickly corrected the problem.

The first game I loaded was CS: GO, which is a fast-paced FPS shooting game that really benefits from fast response time and high refresh rate. Although the image is spread out on the 49-inch screen, the game looks really good. The game feels very fluid, but every now and then there will be some anti-ghosting, this is to be expected. On the first run, I didn't get the necessary 240 FPS to really benefit from the 240Hz refresh rate. This means I need to take out the 1080Ti and replace it with 3080. The increase in FPS is definitely welcome, and the gameplay will definitely improve.

Soon after, I loaded "Shadow of the Tomb" to test some other features, including HDR1000, which we haven't covered in detail yet. The game looks very good, although it does not reach 240FPS at its original resolution. HDR1000 undoubtedly played its role, allowing you to see a good level of detail in extremely bright areas, not to mention open shadows and dark spaces. I tried various OSD settings, and although the monitor provided improved response time, I couldn't really tell the difference between faster and faster.

If you are not a big fan of super wide gaming experience, please don't be afraid, Samsung Odyssey G9 provides a split screen experience (PIP / PBP mode). This not only allows you to divide the screen into separate screens, which is ideal for simulating games on a 27-inch panel, but it can also run dual devices on one panel.

Overall, the gaming performance provided by this monitor left a deep impression on me. Despite some minor flaws on the screen, G9 is still a knockout in the gaming department. In other words, if you really want to take full advantage of this panel, you really need to run a high-end gaming PC.

This is our full review of the impressive Samsung Odyssey G9. Samsung embraced this custom screen category through the nape of the neck and said it is possible. At 49 inches, the G9 is still one of the fastest displays today.

In the end, what you have here is the complete package. With amazing color accuracy, excellent image clarity, and response comparable to custom e-sports panels, the Samsung G9 really ticks all the boxes. Of course, aside from the booth, the only real problem is
