BenQ recently launched a series of exciting new gaming monitors under the MOBIUZ product line, all of which seek to provide exceptional performance and value for money, respectively. In this article, we will introduce BenQ EX2780Q, the latest 1440p 144hz custom gaming monitor in the series. The

EX2780Q is a 27-inch 1440p IPS gaming monitor. As we said earlier, it has an impressive 144Hz refresh rate and an acceptable 3ms input lag. It's packed with some cool features, including HDR400 certification, B.I + (Brightness Intelligence), and 10-bit color boot. Unfortunately, the EX2780Q is a bit slow in the response time category, hitting just 5ms GTG, which is as low as desired in today's market. In other words, the EX2780Q is still great value for money, especially when you consider its price tag of less than $400.

We will test the BenQ panel in many different scenarios, including build quality, color accuracy, image quality, and overall game performance, and compare it with similarly priced alternatives as we proceed.

After Unpacking the BenQ EX2780Q, you have to say that it should be more geared towards a home / office environment. It doesn't really provide any beauty that is often found in gaming-oriented monitors. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing.It looks great in a subtle and elegant way.

BenQ finished the EX2780Q in bronze, which certainly adds a premium element to its aesthetic, although it is a bit popular for some people. The frame is thin and the stand is quite simple, but very sturdy. The bottom edge of the panel itself is where the speakers are located, and the honeycomb design makes the entire bottom edge look like a mini soundbar. The

stand base doesn't really offer much in terms of design features, but it looks pretty good. A thin rod forms a rectangular base on which your remote control can be placed. The rear of the

monitor doesn't offer much in terms of design features - the

Looking briefly at the build quality, BenQ isn't doing a bad job on this panel. Although most of this monitor is made of plastic material, the base of the stand (and its interior) is metal, which gives the EX2780Q a strong and solid feel. The back of the

monitor is also very sturdy, as is the OSD button in the lower right corner of the back. However, one area that feels a bit rushed is the volume control. To say the least, the wheels feel a bit fragile and temperamental. In other words, when you consider everything, you must explain that Ji has done a very good job in building quality. The

panel coating, like many modern displays today, uses an anti-reflective coating with a hardness of 3H, which is matt. The cladding does a good job of mitigating light sources and any potential glare that may be generated during game play during the day. The downside of

is that the display detects a large number of fingerprints, which are easy to notice when looking at the display from a certain angle.

By simply touching the border, EX2780Q did not provide the smallest I have ever seen. Although the top and side frames provide 8 mm slim two-level design, the bottom frame cannot say the same. With speaker and light sensor (for B.I + function), the bottom frame is 32 mm, which is quite thick by today's standards. There is really nothing to say about the booth

BenQ chose a 5-way joystick for this display, which greatly facilitates navigation. After entering the OSD, users will have access to many different image and color settings, including brightness, color presets, contrast, sharpness, HDR, and all other content you expect from the OSD menu. The

EX2780Q comes with a variety of different color presets, no matter what the settings are, you can create a perfect viewing experience. In this section, we will learn about some of the most commonly used presets to understand how they overlap to improve color accuracy and overall display effects.

We will use a colorimeter to test the color accuracy, image quality, maximum brightness and overall uniformity of the entire panel.

We first tested the EX2780Q in the factory configuration. For this monitor, this will be the "standard" profile, "normal" color temperature, and HDR off. As you can see from the results above, this preset does not meet the highest standards. The white point is 6667K (Kelvin) and the depth of black is 0.245 cd / m2. The contrast ratio is slightly higher than the nominal 1000: 1 (1065: 1) and the gamma reading is 2.19. However, what is less impressive is the mean deltaE of 2.4, close to the "visible to the human eye" level.

Next, we ran the Gamer3

preset, primarily because it provides the most natural color reproduction compared to other "player" presets. From the average deltaE of 4.81, it can be seen that the color looks harsh and oversaturated. Gamma is 3.15, both white point and black depth are acceptable.

Let's try the Mbook preset next. It fails in almost all areas - the average deltaE is 3.44, which is the worst result. The Rec.709 preset provides the best out-of-the-box color, and the average deltaE of 1.81 is the best we've tested. The gamma level reaches 2.38, the contrast ratio is 1046:1, and the white point is 66452 Kelvin. This is the most accurate color preset we have tested for the EX2780Q so far.

We conducted a more comprehensive color test using the most accurate color preset (Rec.709) and "user" color temperature. To say the least, the result was a bit unexpected.

White point, black depth and contrast are almost what you expect. However, the average value and the maximum value. The deltaE is quite high (2.9 and 5.41). We lowered the brightness to 120 candela, because the preset brightness is set to over 250 nits, which is much higher than the recommended brightness.

After this test, we calibrated the monitor and first changed the RGB value to 96/96/99. After calibration, the display shows better color reproduction across the board. During calibration, a nearly perfect white point of 6514 Kelvin, a light black depth of 0.11 and a pulse train of 1008:1 were recorded. The average deltaE dropped to 0.18 (one of our best scores ever) and the maximum. deltaE fell to an impressive 0.79. Gamma is stable at 2.2. The

panel uniformity is a test we ran to check the uniformity of brightness and color across the screen. During this test, the central square was used as the reference space. Then test every two squares to see how far it differs from the reference value.

In an ideal world, we want each square to be green, which means that it does not exceed the difference threshold; we can set it at the beginning of the test.

The brightness uniformity of this particular screen is slightly worse. Although the results for many groups are green scores (4 points below the reference square), in some cases some offensive results (human eyes) will be obvious.

As can be seen in the figure above, the lower left corner of the panel is almost 20r higher than the central reference square. Based on the amber result, there are many other squares in this particular department that do not meet the standard.

BenQ EX2780Q is an IPS panel, so the viewing angle is very good. We analyzed multiple types of content from multiple angles and, in most cases, the results were excellent. This monitor is very suitable for playing cooperative games, watching movies, and browsing in general.

As part of the calibration process, DisplayCal can provide an accurate color measurement. The following are the test color gamut results: The BenQ

EX2780Q advertises a color accuracy of 95 IP3, which is exactly what we got from a specific model. The test results are very positive, with DCIP3 coverage and capacity of 94.7% and 102.6% respectively. This equates to 99.9% sRGB color space and 87.2% Adobe RGB space.

As can be seen from the color line above, the EX2780Q's color gamut far exceeds sRGB (dotted line ). After calibration, this is an extremely accurate display, perfect for anyone working in the DCIP3 or sRGB color space.

By checking the maximum brightness, minimum brightness and 120 candela points on this panel, we finished the test for color accuracy and image quality. The result is as follows:

The frame rate keeps up with the monitor refresh rate. With or without FreeSync, gaming is really a very enjoyable experience. Switching from a 60Hz screen to 144Hz as well, it's like night and day. Compared to the 60Hz alternative, it will actually give you 2.4 times the information (per second), which is a distinct advantage when playing competitive games. This results in a full and smooth gaming experience, without most of the screen artifacts such as ghosting, due to low input latency (when using AMA). In this case, when the fast-moving image changes to a darker space, there will be some obvious traces in some scenes, mainly below the ideal 5ms GTG response time.

I turned on HDR settings and played Shadow of the Tomb Raider; this game has benefited a lot when running with HDR signals. The experience is pleasant, but not overwhelming. The 1440p screen resolution really helps improve image sharpness, which is unmatched by the budget-oriented Ex2710. HDR is not spectacular, but it differs slightly in some scenes and games. For example, Shadow of the Tomb Raider provides a slight bluish cast that is quite noticeable during gameplay, especially in the darkest areas. The monitor has three HDR modes to choose from (Game HDRi, Cinema HDRi, and Display HDR), all of which provide their own unique color preferences. BenQ EX2780Q has only passed the VESA HDR 400 certification, which means it belongs to the lowest category of the HDR standard and only provides a mild HDR experience.

We enabled FreeSync for most of the games we tested, and the monitor supports a variable refresh rate between 48 and 144 Hz. Using FreeSync produces results similar to all FreeSync monitors we have tested before, and reducing screen tearing is the best benefit provided.

In general, I have to say that most of the games are good, but some settings are lacking. If you're looking for an immersive experience that makes the most of the HDR signal, this monitor might disappoint you a bit.

Well, we have done a thorough review of the BenQ EX2780Q gaming monitor. The only thing left to discuss is whether we think the money is worth it. Well, look at the market and compare it with other 1440p 144hz monitors, you have to say yes. Retail prices under $ 400 are actually good value for money. That said, since this display tries to meet all needs, it does have some shortcomings in some quarters.

From the front, this monitor provides a good gaming experience for competitive games like Fornite, COD, and CS: GO. It also provides good viewing angles, a wide color gamut, and good colors in Preset Rec. 709. It provides a high refresh rate and low input latency, which is well suited for the competitive games listed above. It also provides a very efficient pair of speakers whose performance is almost better than all the other displays we've tested.

However, for immersive seekers who like single-player games, the EX2780Q may disappoint a bit, especially if they expect an incredible HDR experience. Also, the pre-calibrated color presets (except Rec. 709) don't meet your expectations for this price panel. Overall, the advantage of this display is the price tag. If it is higher than it is now, it will be difficult to recommend it. However, because its performance is better than many other 1440p 144Hz displays on the market, it will definitely join the list of competitors.
