It offers the same overall design as its predecessor, mainly made of plastic, and from the point of view of build quality, it feels very identical. I think ASUS has chosen the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" method for this; we have no opinion on this.

The base of the stand takes on a sculpted appearance, more like a Maya than a game, but still blends seamlessly with the subtle design of the display. As we have always said, ASUS seems to never let us down in terms of the manufacturing quality of the monitor, no matter what price range you are looking for. Your VG279QM can almost say the same, although there is a small flaw, to be honest, it's not a big deal.
However, let us first take the positive side. Although this monitor is mainly made of plastic, it still feels very sturdy. When testing the build quality of this monitor, there were almost no creeks and no much movement at the bottom of the stand. The following results were collected using many different tests and special equipment.
F0r For the purposes of this test, we decided to use the monitor's three gaming presets: career mode, cinema mode, and sRGB. As you will soon see, each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.
In most cases, VG279QM can display very accurate colors right out of the box. The official preset for the default settings is; warm race mode, with brightness and contrast set to 80. Now, in racing mode, you can immediately see that the image feels warm and too bright to be seen every day. We recommend reducing the brightness to around 10 for a more natural and relaxing viewing experience during the day.
Before testing the monitor presets, the first thing we did was adjust the brightness accordingly. In racing mode, we set the brightness to 4 or 120 cd/m².
We tried to use it to make more standardized measurements on all the monitors we tested. However, you will soon discover that this is not always possible.
Anyway, we first tested the racing mode in warm conditions and, as expected, the white level was very low (7083K). In other words, the black is very good, and the original contrast ratio is 1114:5:1. The average delta recorded during our first run was 2.25 and the gamma value was 2.19, which is very good. Of course, what you expect from IPS panels. Next up is the
sRGB mode, and we see similar average delta and gamma readings. However, the contrast is much worse, as are the black levels. This is because you cannot adjust the brightness level when using the sRGB profile; this is annoying. On the positive side, the white level is closer to our ideal 6199K. Cinema
mode is the latest and worst yet. The target is several miles away from where they need to reach, and the measured value is 10310K. Black spots are not the worst, and contrast is not the worst, but this is where the positives end. The average increment returns to 4.96, which is more than twice the preset value of the other two tests.
In terms of maximum brightness, ASUS VG279QM surpassed the advertised 400 cd/m², reaching an impressive 417 cd/m², even higher when used in some profiles. Unfortunately, this may not be the best display for people who watch frequently at night. We can only handle a minimum of 106 cd / m²
. In order to obtain the calibration result, we set the RGB to 100/97/97 and reduce the brightness to 4 (120 cd / m²). After doing this, we let DisplayCal calibrate the monitor and save the configuration file, which can be downloaded below. After the calibration is completed, we will conduct more extensive tests to obtain a wider range of results. As you can see, these numbers are more in line with our "ideal" numbers.
The white point is perfect, and the black depth is also very good, 0.1105 cd/m². The contrast is comparable to the advertised 1000: 1 rating. The 1.04 average delta left a deep impression on me, which means that this monitor displays almost perfect colors on average. That said, we did find some very disturbing differences in the process. There is a big difference between certain shades of blue up to 27.8 (the highest value we have recorded so far). We decided to run the test multiple times, hoping for different results, but this is not the case. The
panel uniformity is a test we ran to check the uniformity of brightness and color on the screen. During this test, the central square was used as the reference space. Then test all other squares to see how far it differs from the reference value. In an ideal world, we would like each square to be green, which means it did not break the differential threshold, which we can set at the beginning of the test.

I am very satisfied with the brightness and color uniformity of this particular panel. It is one of the best monitors we have tested so far, showing only green and amber results on the lines; squares that exceed the maximum threshold will be colored red.
Perhaps the most impressive is the corner. They showed some of the best results measured in this panel; this area is notorious for its poor performance in the uniformity department. Three of the four corners go back to green readings, which is great from a broader perspective.
All in all, in terms of uniformity, you can't really touch this panel. Its performance has reached an extremely high level.
In terms of viewing angle, this IPS panel performed well again. Even at a wide angle (up to 40 degrees or more), there is not much deviation in color or contrast. Unlike the ASUS VG278Q, this monitor has no real issues in the color department when viewed from top to bottom. I didn’t notice any color inversion or halo, even in
ASUS VG279QM still performs well in terms of color gamut. It provides 116% sRGB volume and 97.5% coverage, which is not enough in terms of blues. However, a more positive point is that the volume and coverage of the Adobe RGB (79.8%) and DCI P3 (82.1%) color gamut are better.
Overall, the color gamut registration of the ASUS VG279QM is very positive. Although this monitor is clearly designed for gaming, it can certainly provide reasons for editing with the VG279QM, especially in the sRGB color spectrum.
The next stage of testing will pay more attention to the response time, refresh rate and overall responsiveness of ASUS VG279QM. We will compare the ASUS VG279Q through a series of game scenarios to see how it performs.
As usual, I loaded the first group in the factory settings to understand what the monitor can do, pre-calibrated. The first impression was solid, the game felt smooth, and I didn't notice any ghosting or initial color changes. The smoothness of the display left a deep impression on me, but for a display with a 240Hz refresh rate, this can be expected.
I increased the monitor refresh rate to 280Hz through the overclocking setting in the OSD. This is a fairly simple process that only takes a few clicks; don’t think that this monitor needs physical overclocking, it doesn’t. Once we speeded up the refresh rate, I went back to the game, and honestly, I didn't really notice the huge difference from when the monitor was set to 240Hz. In other words, continuing to play the game is very smooth and enjoyable. The less positive thing about
is that we should not forget that this monitor is still a 1080p panel. Although this is very useful for certain scenarios, such as extracting the most FPS from the system, it is still not the best in terms of image clarity. We got the usual grainy images you expect from this standard display. However, due to the lower resolution, we were able to hit 300FPS, allowing us to get the most out of this monitor and take full advantage of the variable refresh rate (GSync in this case).
We tested all the different monitor settings available, including overdrive, ELMB (extremely low motion blur), shadow enhancement, and some gaming presets that didn't match my taste in color. Overdrive can be adjusted in increments of 20. The range is between 0 and 100. 60 is the best point for the game I am playing. ELMB is a pulse backlighting feature that can increase the response time of the pixels. Although the effect of this on image quality is not very obvious, it does greatly reduce the brightness. In addition, you cannot use the ELMB function in conjunction with Overdrive, it is one or the other.
After playing a lot of games on this monitor, I can say that I am very satisfied with the results it provides. Combining excellent color accuracy with fast response time and refresh rate is a dream come true for gamers. The only minor drawback is that this monitor is 1080p. Although 1440p is always more popular in terms of image quality and overall immersion, it is a bit impractical on larger stages. I mean, you need a really good PC to hit 280Hz in a lot of modern games, which is true.
