Although many people may think that AMD cards are not supported or cannot handle ray tracing at all, this is not the case. As we can see from Crytek’s Neon Noir demo, AMD cards are very capable of rendering ray tracing, and they are actually very good at it!
Benchmark Neon Noir is a free software that allows you to see how your system compares with other systems in terms of rendering ray tracing technology. Neon Noir is based on a ray tracing demo of the same name seen during GDC 2019.
Although it can be used with any hardware configuration, there are some recommended minimum specifications to keep in mind.
If you want to find more information about the Neon Noir benchmark, you can find a very in-depth article on their website that describes it in more detail.
As you may have guessed, NVIDIA performed very well. With RTX 2080Ti at the top of the list, RTX 2080 SUPER and RTX 2070 SUPER followed closely behind. The main surprise is that AMD's RX5700 XT appears to outperform GTX 1080 in both the 1080p and ultra-configuration tests. from 1440p.
This test data comes from Wccftech, they ran many benchmarks using a number of different GPUs. When it comes to the AMD RX5700 XT and GTX 1080, the average speed of the RX 5700 XT when running at 1440p is 49FPS and the 99th percentile is 28FPS. In contrast, the average speed of the Nvidia GTX 1080 at 1440p is 41FPS and the 99th percentile is 28FPS.
This shows that AMD is not as backward as people think in terms of ray tracing. They still have some time to play, because Crytek's "grid-based" ray tracing may not become part of Cryengine until 2020 at the earliest, and we may still see further improvements from AMD before then. .
If you want to see how well your system compares, you can download Neon Noir for free from Crytek's marketplace.
