In the past 12 months, I have had the privilege of testing a large number of monitors, comparing monitors covering the entire range of prices, performance, and sizes. Although I have tried some of the best monitors on the market, since its launch more than a year ago, the high-end gaming panel still makes me elusive: Alienware AW3420DW.

Fortunately for me, the wait is finally over. Today, I will sit down with this impressive 34-inch ultra-wide gaming monitor to see how it compares with some of the top competitors in the market. We will introduce Alienware AW3420DW step by step to understand how it performs in gaming, general and productivity scenarios, and finally understand the value (or lack of value) it brings. , Dell also promises to provide the highest level of color reproduction through this panel, equipped with Nano IPS color, which can provide up to 98 IP3 color gamut coverage and 135% (as commercially available) sRGB.

This makes it very accurate for photo/video editing in the DCIP3 color gamut, not to mention sRGB and Adobe RGB.

Alienware AW3420DW uses a rather unique packaging box to provide excellent protection for the internal panel. The screen is located in a thin foam layer on a stronger polystyrene material. The stand is individually packaged and must be self-assembled before connecting to the display . In other words, the structure of the screen is very simple, but a second pair of hands may be necessary because it is heavy.

In terms of aesthetics, this panel is absolutely top notch. High-quality design with Alienware's new Legend design language is reflected in the past 15 million Aurora R9 laptops and desktops. Compared to other displays in the 34-inch size range, the AW3420DW is way ahead in direct view. The rear of the

display is the bulk of the display's aesthetics, including various lighting areas that can be fully customized within the display. A small Alienware logo in the upper corner of the panel is fully RGB and can be customized via the monitor's OSD. The back of the stand provides the largest RGB area on the monitor. An RGB belt can be found, which covers most booths in a very elegant way. You can also find the third RGB area below the front of the monitor (where the logo is), adding the finishing touch to this already impressive monitor. The curves of the

display are subtle but absolutely eye-catching, and it plays an important role in the immersive features provided during gaming and entertainment viewing. The base of the stand is not only well-made, but also looks good, providing subtle curves that contrast sharply with the entire acute angle. The Alienware logo is located at the bottom of the panel, completing the appearance of this monitor in a fantastic style. For a large (and expensive) monitor like this, the

build quality is an aspect I don’t trust. Fortunately, Alienware also seems to prioritize this area, achieving some of the highest quality displays. The

AW3420DW is one of Alienware's more expensive panels, which means you want excellent build quality throughout the design process. Well, this is exactly what you have. Everything about this monitor feels very well built and functional. The stand is very sturdy and the tilt mechanism always provides excellent stability, even when tilted diffusely. The

stand is of simple and strong construction, and uses a clip system to attach to the monitor, as mentioned before, with almost no shaking during use. Although plastic is used throughout the design of this display, it still feels very good, with almost no bending when pressure is applied.

Overall, from a build quality point of view, I am very impressed with AW3420DW.

Simply look at the inputs, they are all located on the back of the display in a vertical shape. Annoyingly, connecting some cables to the input can be a bit tricky, especially if you don't have thin fingers.

Most inputs are on the back in the normal orientation, but two additional USB 3.0 ports and a 3.5 mm audio jack can be found under the Alienware logo on the front.

Finally, we have a screen display.

AW3420DW provides a fairly deep screen display, covering all common bases. At the rear, you can use the main joystick control. Clicking in any direction will bring up the menu and navigation is a breeze. Besides this, you have four additional buttons: one of them is used to exit the menu and the other buttons can save customizable presets. After

enters the OSD, you can easily resolve all common issues, including color presets, brightness and contrast, game features, input, AlienFX lighting, and additional customization.

Unfortunately, the Alienware AW3420DW does not provide sRGB color presets. However, as we will learn soon, the out-of-the-box colors are not that bad, this is mainly due to the NANO IPS technology used in the panel itself. The

monitor has many experiences that excite me, but the most important thing must be the color accuracy. As mentioned above, Alienware has equipped this display with Nano IPS technology, an improved version of IPS technology, with more accurate colors.

This monitor can cover 135% of the sRGB color spectrum, which is very suitable for photo / video editing. With that said, the following are the detailed results of the dark test we ran. We have run many different tests on the AW3420DW, covering various color presets and final calibration modes. We also standardized the test to 120 candela to create a more level playing field.

Starting from the out-of-the-box settings, we see that the overall reading is quite good. The white point is 6673K, and the black level is also very low. The contrast is about 1000:1, and the gamma seems to point to 2.3 instead of 2.2. The average color increment is not the best in the world (2.74), but it works out of the box, so it is not the worst we have seen.

Next, we move to the "warm" preset, which provides numbers very similar to the standard. The white point is the weakest among the measured specifications, only 5898K. The black level is low again, and the contrast is almost the same as the previous preset. The average delta dropped slightly to 2.63, and the gamma dropped to 2.25. After Warm, we tested the "Game 1" preset, which again released almost the same specifications as Warm and Standard. In this case, the only difference is that the white point is increased to 6712K.

We finally tried a custom setting of 100/100/100 (RGB) and actually saw a drop in most cases. The average white point is 6187K and the average increment is 3.07. Contrast is the best in this preset and gamma registers as 2.25.

At this stage, we run a deeper color test on the most accurate uncalibrated preset; in this case, it is the warm preset. As expected, these numbers fell slightly in the extended test, but in most cases, they stayed the same. The maximum increase ended up being 5.95, not bad.

We decided to run a calibration test after this to see how accurate we can get the color from this panel. We set the profile to "Custom" and change the RGB to 98% / 99% / 98% and run the initial test. Color accuracy after calibrating the panel is a huge improvement. We saw a near perfect 6530K white point, a low black level of 0.13, and a 912: 1 contrast ratio. Even more impressive is the average and maximum delta, which dropped to near-perfect levels of 0.2 and 1.02. The overall gamma is still a bit high, but it's not too crazy at 2.23. The

panel uniformity is a test we ran to check the uniformity of brightness and color on the screen. During this test, the central square was used as the reference space. Then test all other squares to see how far it differs from the reference value.

In an ideal world, we want all the squares to be green, which means that it does not break the differential threshold, which we can set at the beginning of the test.

AW3420DW provides very good panel uniformity, the left side of the entire screen is green (very good). As you would expect from most panels, some corners are not as accurate as we hoped, and the upper and lower right corners are the most unstable corners. This is common in modern displays, and it is difficult to achieve perfect uniformity.

As you can see in the above slide, the red area provides a reduced brightness level, which is about 17 candela lower than acceptable. The brightness of the adjacent area has not reached 120 candela, but it is not at the same level as the corner.

On AW3420DW. Having said that, they are not the worst. The color starts to drift after about 40 degrees, which is honestly a very dark angle for viewing this panel. Overall, I am very satisfied with the viewing angle provided by this monitor.

Among the monitors we have tested so far, this must be one of the best in terms of color gamut volume and coverage. As can be seen from the above figure, the AW3420DW actually provides up to 145.2% of the sRGB color spectrum after being properly calibrated. In addition, perhaps even more impressive is the RGB color volume of 100° and 102° IP3.

has such a large color gamut capacity, users who use all three main color spectrums will be very satisfied with the accuracy of this display. This includes video or photo editing, at an incredibly high level.

We finished the image quality and color accuracy test by checking the maximum brightness, minimum brightness, and 120 candela levels on this panel. The result is as follows:

has been tested for color accuracy and image clarity, and it's time to test the Alienware AW3420DW in many different games. Since this is primarily a gaming monitor, it will be interesting to see how it performs in this particular department.

As always, when testing the responsiveness of the monitor, I first loaded my favorite goto game: CS: GO. CounterStrike is a fast-paced game that really pushes your display to the limit, especially when looking at the refresh rate and response time. If your monitor runs slowly in these sectors, you will experience many different screen artifacts, including ghosting and screen tearing.

Having said that, the experience that AW3420DW gave me left a deep impression on me, despite the higher demands on my PC. I managed to maintain 120 frames per second, and (when Gsync is enabled) I found the game to be very smooth. The aspect ratio is a bit strange at first, but nothing unpleasant. The colors are very bright and really help immersion, especially when combined with the charming 1900R curvature.

One thing I want to say about this panel is that if you like competitive games, 21:9 is definitely not the best choice. Although it provides you with a larger field of view, it can be much more difficult (usually) to identify the enemy and the demands on your system are also higher.

After playing FPS for a while, I loaded some single player games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Shadow of the Tomb. Unsurprisingly, the demand for a PC with a greater 21:9 aspect ratio (and 1440p resolution) had a huge impact on my overall performance. In other words, if built properly, this monitor can indeed provide excellent immersion, taking you into the virtual world in a way that only ultra-wide monitors can do. The color accuracy is very good, and the details can still be seen in the brightest areas. It's great to see some form of high dynamic range used on this monitor, especially in terms of price. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Overall, the gaming experience is very good. For me, this monitor is definitely suitable for single player games, especially large free third-person games like Red Dead and The Witcher. The colors are exciting, and the 1900R curve makes you feel immersed in the game, which cannot be replicated by a tablet. This is the case with

What can I say about this panel? It does check all the correct boxes. Excellent gameplay, brilliant colors and true immersion, which cannot be replicated by a small display. The only thing left to discuss is the price, and it's not cheap. The

is priced between US$1,100 and US$1,300 (depending on when you buy it). This is one of the most expensive monitors you can buy. Having said that, does it provide you with all the features of an advanced display? Well, in addition to the low refresh rate of 120Hz, you must also say yes, 100%. The thing about a monitor of this size (and resolution) is; if you have a 240Hz refresh rate, then you may not be able to reach these frame rates anyway, unless you have a top gaming PC with the latest hardware.

So in general, although this monitor is a bit expensive, I still think it provides everything you want for gaming and productivity scenarios. As it is equipped with Nano IPS color, it is one of the panels with the highest color and precision that we have had the honor of testing.
