If you are familiar with Alienware monitors or any of its products, you know that aesthetics is your top priority. That being said, you won’t be surprised when you learn that AW2720HF may be one of the best-looking monitors we have on hand. It offers a stylish and elegant design suitable for most environments. It uses Alienware's new Legend design language, inherited from its latest 15 million laptops and R9 desktops. The
design is neither bold nor boring. This is a balanced combination of the two, done in a futuristic style, it really feels worthwhile. The front of the display is quite quiet, with only the slim bezel and the medium-sized Alienware logo worth mentioning. However, when we moved back, this display really became lifelike. There is a large oval RGB ring on the back of the
bracket, which can be fully customized in the monitor's OSD. More RGB can be found on the back of the panel, and the beautifully designed Alien head sits in the upper corner of the panel. The entire panel uses light gray plastic, which is in stark contrast to the black (front) and RGB (rear) frame. Alienware also printed the number 27 on the back of the screen, although it looks attractive, it didn't actually add anything to this particular panel.
For me, build quality is one of the most important aspects of a display, especially when your panel is in the $ 400,500 price range. Having said that, Alienware has historically performed well in this particular area; our expectations for their latest products are not inferior.
Fortunately, AW2720HF did not disappoint, providing top-notch build quality throughout the design. Starting from the material, most of this monitor is made of plastic, but don't let this disappoint you. The plastic used for the liner of the bracket and the back of the panel feels very strong. It hardly bends during testing and has a beautiful coating, which is attractive to say the least.

Speaking of games, users can add additional game graphics to their screens through the OSD, including timers and frame rate counters. Finally, all RGB on the monitor can be modified in the AlienFX Lighting built into the monitor itself.
Image and color accuracy are very important in gaming, especially when you are looking for the highest level of immersion. With this in mind, we will gradually learn about AW2720HF, see how it performs in this particular department, test it under several different presets, and end with a complete calibration and color accuracy test.
out of the box, Alienware said that this monitor provides 99% sRGB and 75obe RGB color gamut coverage. This means that if you use the sRGB color spectrum, this monitor should be very suitable for general viewing and some video/photo editing.
Of course we will test this theory to see how accurate the panel is. All tests were done at 120 candela to ensure all preset levels of playing field, not to mention the similar monitors we use.
As always, we started with direct testing. The brightness is set to 100% (385 candela), which is too bright. We quickly lowered the brightness to around 26% (120 candela) and started testing. The results of the
OOT setting are very encouraging, providing perfect white and a contrast ratio of 1043: 1. The depth of black is 0.11, which is still good, and the average color increase is about 2 , 26, which is pretty good considering this monitor is not designed for color accuracy.
We used several presets and the results were almost identical. The white point is always very good, as is the depth of black. The maximum average delta is 2.64 (cool presets), and the contrast of all non-cool presets is stable. For a monitor that focuses on gaming performance rather than color, I am very satisfied with the out-of-the-box results. Remember, these are the results of pre-calibration.
At this stage, we always like to use the most accurate preset and run a more comprehensive color test to see if the color increment increases. For AW2720HF, this is the warm preset. The depth test results are very similar to the shorter test results, but we got a maximum incremental reading of 5.42, which is very good considering this situation.
After this test, we wasted no time calibrating the monitor. We use custom presets so we can have full access to the monitor's RGB profile. For this panel, the best results were obtained when manually changing the RGB to 89% / 94% / 92%.
We continued to calibrate the monitor and the results were impressive, providing a perfect white point, gamma, and average boost. The contrast has dropped slightly to around 845:1, but the benefits of calibration far outweigh the small drop in contrast. The maximum delta value fell sharply and is now 1.34.

panel uniformity is a test we ran to check the uniformity of brightness and color on the screen. During this test, the central square was used as the reference space. Then test every two squares to see how different it is from the reference.
In an ideal world, we want each square to be green, which means that it does not exceed the difference threshold; we can set it at the beginning of the test.
Note: Results will vary from panel to panel. The
AW2720HF left a deep impression on me in the panel uniformity test. The uniformity in brightness and color deviation is almost flawless. Usually, when you approach the corner, the screen begins to shake; however, this is not the case with the AW2720HF. The brightness and color of the entire screen are quite real, with only a slight drop in certain areas.
As you would expect from an IPS panel, the viewing angle of the AW2720HF is very good. I tested AW2720HF with ASUS TUF VG279QM (another high-response IPS gaming monitor) and the results are very similar. You really won't see such a big deviation down to about 40 degrees or more.

The Adobe RGB and DCIP3 measurement result is about 7275%, which is still good for this particular marketing panel.
As can be seen from the image above, the AW2720HF color gamut can easily erase green, red and pink from the sRGB color gamut. In other words, it lacks a bit of the blues, which is quite common on screens today.
We finished the image quality and color accuracy test by checking the maximum brightness, minimum brightness, and 120 candela levels on this panel. The results are as follows:
color accuracy and image clarity are unaffected, it's time to let the AW2720HF run a lot of different response tests, mainly game scenes. Seeing that this monitor appears to be designed for competitive gamers, and sold as the first IPS panel to provide a true 240Hz native refresh rate, we are very keen to understand how it compares to other highly responsive monitors.
Before starting any testing, we made sure to set the monitor to 240Hz via the Nvidia control panel and enable Gsync immediately.
I must say that my first impression of this monitor is very positive. I loaded a lot of different games and everything felt good. The first game we tested was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a fast-paced shooter that requires the highest level of response, especially when trying to take game performance to a new level. The motion feels very smooth, my screen tearing or ghosting is almost zero. I played several competitive games and you can definitely feel the difference, especially when the enemy is thrown into a throat and you are spraying automatic weapons. The 240Hz refresh rate is really excellent in these dense situations.
We decided to run some single player games later to understand the immersion of the panel. To my surprise, the colors and overall feel of these titles really add to the overall viewing experience. The colors are vibrant and sharp, and the game itself (as I have already said) is very smooth and clear. Games like Red Dead Redemption and Shadow Of The Tomb feel very immersive, and time really seems to be flying by.
In other words, you are limited to the 27-inch screen size of AW2720HF. If you really want to increase the immersion you get, I definitely recommend you choose AW3420DW, which is a 34-inch curved panel with amazing image quality.
finally has another advantage, because this panel is 1080p, you don't need all the latest components to reach the 240 frames per second limit of this display. The mid-range version should provide all the frameworks you need in games such as CS: GO and Fortnite.
Remember, the range of Gsync on this monitor is 40Hz-240Hz, which means that if your PC can only grab 150 frames per second, you will still get a smooth and buttery experience while gaming.

The only question to be answered is whether we think this monitor can justify its high price of US$400. Well, it all depends on what purpose you intend to use the display for. If you like to play FPS competitive games, then AW2720HF will definitely not go wrong. When you compare this monitor with other monitors in the price range, you will have to say that the AW2720HF is insufficient in value and performance. However, if you are more focused on editing and creative tasks, we recommend that you choose a larger monitor with better colors, such as AW3420DW.
