From design, Asus seems to have done a good job on this monitor. The back is almost entirely white, with the classic ASUS NeoAztec etching design. The

ROG logo can be seen on the rear and the "Republic Of Gamers" branding is at the top of the rear. Overall, the rear has a very sci-fi aesthetic, reminiscent of the armor of the Imperial Stormtrooper or the hull of some kind of spaceship. The build quality of the

XG43UQ feels very robust, just as you would expect from a monitor that retails for over $ 1,000. The main body of the display is mainly made of plastic, but this will not affect the physical robustness of its case. The

frame is completely metal and feels very strong. Due to its wide "V" shape, it provides excellent balance. On the back, users will find a small ferrule covered with power cables and some additional inputs. Although it does provide some features, it feels a bit brittle.

Having said that, this is the only area where XG43UQ has a low score in the build quality department. All other parts of this monitor are very well done.

Like most modern displays, the XG43UQ is equipped with an anti-glare coating with a matte effect, which is ideal for mitigating the effects of natural and artificial light sources.

Although it can effectively reduce the light, if you are in particularly strong light, it may absorb some reflections. However, due to the high peak brightness, you can use it under these specific conditions. But remember, this finish can easily leave large fingerprint marks.

When it comes to the display, the XG43UQ has a sizable bezel - it measures 18mm (side and top) by 25mm (bottom). Although they are not the slimmest in the world, they certainly won't lose any immersion in the big screen gaming experience. The support of the

We started the color accuracy performance part by conducting preliminary tests on the XG43UQ out of the box. For this monitor, a "competition mode" preset is installed and the brightness is set to 254 candela, which is higher than the recommended brightness for daily use. The colors of the

XG43UQ in the factory settings are not bad in any respect. Of course, they are not the best we have seen, but they are also not the worst. We recorded a white balance of 6090K (slightly lower than IDEAL) and a good black depth of 0.0294 cd/m². The contrast score is higher than the nominal value of 4000:1 (4171:1), and the gamma value is set to 2.21. The average deltaE is 2.62, which makes the color accuracy of the RACING mode set very well, but this is not surprising. Chapter

Landscape-Landscape mode provides more vitality and richer viewing experience. With this setting, the brightness will definitely increase, pushing it above the recommended threshold of 120 candela.

Cinema-Cinema mode provides XG43UQ with a blue cast, which is absolutely eye-catching compared to the other presets in the monitor's GameVisual library.

RTS / RPG mode: This preset provides a profile similar to sRGB. The color feels very balanced, with orange/red appearing suddenly.

MOBA: Moba is the worst preset I've tried, removing a lot of colors to make it look almost black and white.

After trying various presets, I did not waste time and decided to calibrate the panel: recording color gamut, panel uniformity and overall color accuracy.

I selected the `User` setting for calibration and changed the RGB value to 96/96/100. The results of

calibration, we were able to significantly reduce the overall average deltaE. The white balance remains constant at around 6500K, as does the black depth (0.0295). The contrast ratio dropped slightly to 3905:1, and the gamma reading was 2.22. The average DeltaE reading after calibration is 0.37, which improves the accuracy by approximately 62%. In other words, we still get a maximum deltaE of 2.06, which is a bit disappointing, but it is still completely acceptable for working with color accuracy in the sRGB spectrum.

Overall, the color accuracy of XG43UQ is quite good. For gamers who like to play multiple games and need good sRGB presets for color accuracy to work, I can easily recommend this monitor. The

panel uniformity is a test we ran to check the uniformity of brightness and color on the screen. During this test, the central square was used as the reference space. Then test all other squares to see how far it differs from the reference value.

In an ideal world, we want all the squares to be green, which means that it does not break the differential threshold, which we can set at the beginning of the test.

panel uniformity of this display is surprisingly good, and the average deltaE and brightness give a good score across the board. As can be seen from the above figure, the uniformity on the left side of the display is the worst. However, for the amber score, you won't notice much deviation from the center reference dial. I wasted no time and loaded up one of the competitive games that I used to play when testing 144Hz (and higher) monitors; in this case, it was CS: GO. While this 43-inch beast isn't necessarily designed for that kind of gaming, I did run a quick test anyway to see how it handles fast-moving images, input lag, and overall responsiveness. My first impression was not good. Without a doubt, the screen will be the victim of a ghosting effect and a rather radical perceptual blur. The pixel response time does not seem to be clear enough to keep up with the rhythm of the game, resulting in smudges and general image laziness (if this makes sense).

I adjusted the screen display, increased the OD setting and made sure to set the maximum refresh rate when playing in 4K and 2K resolutions. I set the Overdrive to the maximum and the refresh rate is set to 120Hz @ 4K and 144Hz @ 1440p. However, all of this resulted in reverse ghosting and fairly obvious whitening of most objects. The happy medium seems to be Overdrive `3` setting and FreeSync enabled. That said, in these games the screen pixel response time is still very slow.

As we mentioned earlier, one of the outstanding features of this monitor is its VESA DisplayHDR1000 certification. In theory, we should be able to achieve incredibly accurate and immersive HDR experiences in games and general viewing scenarios.

We played many different HDR compatible games on the XG43UQ, all of which proved to be an incredibly immersive experience. Having a huge 43-inch gaming monitor is great and provides an immersive feel that smaller alternatives don't (or can't) have. Passed VESA DisplayHDR1000 certification, XG43UQ can display incredibly bright and dark scenes with excellent clarity without any real local dimming function. XG43UQ is edge lighting with several different dimming areas, which is expected to be in the 816 range. However, due to the large native contrast ratio of 4000:1, the XG43UQ will not suffer too much from the lack of local dimming. .

We played Shadow of the Tomb Raider with and without HDr, the difference is obvious. We set the display to the maximum HDR setting (HDR 1000 brightness) and the scene changed from arcade to very realistic. Many details can be observed in extremely bright areas, for example by looking at the sun. Also, dark areas now provide more detail, especially when combined with ray tracing.

What I mean is that after playing this closely on PC for a while, it becomes a bit overwhelming, not to mention the pressure on my eyes. However, since this is an HDMI 2.1 display for console players, it shouldn't be a big deal.

We ran many other games on this monitor, and each game showed a very engaging HDR experience, adding rich detail, realism, and immersion.

Finally, I decided to use this display in general content consumption scenarios: movies, TV, and general browsing. Unsurprisingly, the performance of this monitor is very high, providing excellent image quality and color accuracy in movies and TV shows. The excellent contrast and deep black of the VA panel help create an immersive movie watching experience, especially horror or science fiction movies with dark scenes. We activated the dynamic dimming function, which helped to further reduce black and make SDR content more HDR-like, although not as realistic.

We turned on HDR and played some movies to see how they looked. The experience is great, providing excellent detail and clarity. When it comes to HDR without local dimming, this is probably one of the best displays we have tested in a while.
