In the past 12 months, I have had the privilege of testing a large number of monitors, comparing monitors that span the entire price, performance, and size range. Although I have tried some of the best monitors on the market, since its launch over a year ago, one high-end gaming panel still puts me off: Alienware AW3420DW.

Fortunately for me, the wait is finally over. build quality is an aspect I don’t trust. Fortunately, Alienware also seems to prioritize this area, making some of the highest quality displays a reality. The

AW3420DW is one of Alienware's more expensive panels, which means you want excellent build quality throughout the design process. Well, this is exactly what you have. Everything about this monitor feels well built and fully functional. The stand is very sturdy and the tilt mechanism always provides excellent stability, even when tilted inaccurately. The

bracket has a simple and strong structure, it is fixed to the monitor with a clip system -as mentioned before- with almost no shaking during use. Although plastic is used throughout the design of this display, it still feels very good, with almost no bending when pressure is applied.

I have to say that in general, from a build quality point of view, I am very impressed with the AW3420DW.

Simply look at the input terminals, they are all located on the back of the display in a vertical shape. Annoyingly, connecting some cables to the input can be a bit tricky, especially if you don't have thin fingers.

Most inputs are located on the back in the normal orientation, but two additional USB 3.0 ports and a 3.5 mm audio jack can be found under the Alienware logo on the front.

Finally, we have a screen display. The

AW3420DW provides a fairly deep screen display, covering all common bases. At the rear, you can use the main joystick control. Clicking in any direction will bring up the menu and navigation is a breeze. Besides this, you have four additional buttons: one of them is used to exit the menu and the other buttons can save customizable presets. After

enters the OSD, you can easily deal with all common issues, including color, brightness and contrast presets, game features, input, AlienFX lighting, and additional customization.

Unfortunately, the Alienware AW3420DW does not provide sRGB color presets. However, we will soon learn that the out-of-the-box colors are not that bad, this is mainly due to the NANO IPS technology used in the panel. The

monitor has many experiences that excite me, but the most important thing must be the color accuracy. As mentioned above, Alienware has equipped this display with Nano IPS technology, an improved version of IPS technology, with more accurate colors.

This monitor can cover 135% of the sRGB color spectrum, which is very suitable for photo / video editing. In other words, the following are the detailed results of the dark test we conducted. We have run many different tests on the AW3420DW, covering various color presets and final calibration modes. We also standardized the test to 120 candela to create a more level playing field.

Starting with the out-of-the-box settings, we see that the overall reading is quite good. The white point is 6673K, and the black level is also very low. The contrast is about 1000:1, and the gamma seems to point to 2.3 instead of 2.2. The average color difference is not the best in the world (2.74), but it is available out of the box, so it is not the worst we have seen.

Next, we move to the "warm" preset, which provides numbers very similar to the standard. The white point is the weakest among the measured specifications, only 5898K. The black level is low again, and the contrast is almost the same as the previous preset. The average delta dropped slightly to 2.63, and the gamma dropped to 2.25. After Warm, we tested the "Game 1" preset, which again released almost the same specifications as Warm and Standard. In this case, the only difference is that the white point is increased to 6712K.

We finally tried a custom 100/100/100 (RGB) setting and actually saw a drop in most cases. The average white point is 6187K and the average increment is 3.07. Contrast is the best in this preset and gamma registers as 2.25.

At this stage, we run a deeper color test on the most accurate uncalibrated preset; in this case, it is a warm color preset. As expected, these numbers were slightly reduced in the extended test, but in most cases, they stayed the same. The maximum increment is finally 5.95, which is not bad.

We decided to run a calibration test after this to see how accurate we can get the color from this panel. We set the configuration file to "Custom" and modify the RGB to 98% / 99% / 98% and perform the initial test. The color accuracy after calibrating the panel is a huge improvement. We saw a nearly perfect 6530K white point, a low black level of 0.13 and a contrast ratio of 912:1. Even more impressive are the average and maximum delta values, which fell to near-perfect levels of 0.2 and 1.02. The overall gamma is still a bit high, but not too crazy at 2.23.

Panel Uniformity is a test we run to verify the brightness and color uniformity of the entire screen. During this test, the central square was used as the reference space. Then test every two squares to see how different it is from the reference value.

In an ideal world, we want all the squares to be green, which means that it does not break the differential threshold, which we can set at the beginning of the test.

Note: The results will vary from panel to panel. The

AW3420DW provides very good panel uniformity, and the left side of the entire screen is green (very good). As you would expect from most panels, some corners are not as accurate as we hoped, and the upper and lower right corners are the most unstable corners. This is common in modern displays, and it is difficult to achieve perfect uniformity.

As you can see in the above slide, the red area provides a reduced brightness level, which is about 17 candela lower than acceptable. The adjacent area also does not reach the brightness of 120 candela, but it is different from the brightness of the corner.

On AW3420DW. Having said that, they are not the worst. The color starts to drift after about 40 degrees, which is honestly a very dark angle for viewing this panel. Overall, I am very satisfied with the viewing angle provided by this monitor.

Judging from the monitors we have tested so far, in terms of volume and color gamut coverage, this monitor must be one of the best in its class. As can be seen from the figure above, the AW3420DW actually provides 145.2% of the sRGB color spectrum after being properly calibrated. Also, perhaps even more impressive is the 100x RGB and 102x IP3 color volume.

As always, when testing the responsiveness of the monitor, I first loaded my favorite goto game: CS: GO. CounterStrike is a fast-paced game that really pushes the screen to the limit, especially when looking at the refresh rate and response time. If your monitor is slow in these areas, you will experience many different screen artifacts, including ghosting and screen tearing.

That said, the experience that AW3420DW gave me left a deep impression on me, despite the increased demands on my PC. I managed to maintain 120 frames per second and (when Gsync is enabled) I found the game to be very smooth. The aspect ratio is a bit odd at first, but nothing too offensive. The colors are very bright and really help immersion, especially when combined with the charming 1900R curvature.

One thing I want to say about this panel is that if you like competitive games, 21:9 is definitely not the best choice. Although it provides you with a larger field of view, identifying enemies can be more difficult (usually) and more demanding on your system.

After playing FPS for a while, I loaded some single player games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Shadow of the Tomb. Unsurprisingly, the demand for a PC with a greater 21:9 aspect ratio (and 1440p resolution) had a huge impact on my overall performance. In other words, if properly built, this monitor can provide excellent immersion, taking you into the virtual world in a way that only ultra-wide monitors can. Color accuracy is very satisfactory and details can still be seen in the brightest areas. It's great to see that this monitor uses some form of high dynamic range, especially the price tag. Unfortunately this is not the case.

Overall, the gaming experience is very good. For me, this monitor is definitely suitable for single-player games, especially big free-roaming third-person games like Red Dead and The Witcher. The colors are exciting and the 1900R curve allows you to immerse yourself in the game, something a tablet cannot replicate.

What can I say about this panel? Check all the correct boxes. Excellent gameplay, brilliant colors and true immersion, which cannot be replicated by a small display. The only thing left to discuss is the price, and it's not cheap. The

is priced between US$1,100 and US$1,300 (depending on when you buy it). This is one of the most expensive monitors you can buy. Having said that, does it provide you with all the features of an advanced display? Well, in addition to the low refresh rate of 120Hz, you must also say yes, 100%. The thing about a monitor of this size (and resolution) is; if you have a 240Hz refresh rate, then you may not be able to reach these frame rates anyway, unless you have a top gaming PC with the latest hardware.

So in general, although this monitor is a bit expensive, I still think it provides everything you want for gaming and productivity scenarios. Since it is equipped with Nano IPS colors, it is one of the panels with more colors and precision that we have had the honor of testing.
