About 12 months ago, Acer announced the news of three new products that will fit its impressive Predator series of gaming monitors. The latest monitors will be part of the new Predator XB3 series, with impressive performance specifications that can take them to the top of the gaming market.

Among the three monitors announced in June 2020, we will test and evaluate the Acer Predator XB273U in today's article. The XB273U GS is a 27-inch gaming panel with all the conveniences, including a fast 165Hz refresh rate, a low 1ms GTG response time and a 2560 x 1440p screen resolution. XB273U provides IPS experience, 95% DCIP3 color gamut and VESA displayHDR 400 certification.

Acer gave the XB273U its Predator textbook brand, providing a "noisy" look, of course, more inclined to the aesthetics of the game. In most cases, the front of the screen looks great; Thanks to the very thin two-stage bezel and matte panel coating, it provides a stylish appearance. However, someone from the RGB department was not satisfied and decided to glue some interesting RGB light strips to the bottom edge. Although we've seen it on many monitors before (the Samsung G7 is the most notable), I can't recall once thinking it looked good. Certainly some people will like the RGB on the front, but for me it just adds stickiness to the solid looking display. In addition to the

RGB, Acer also uses a metal-designed tripod-style stand, fitted with a plastic cover, which provides cable management and headphone mounts at the rear. The bronze gray theme fits in perfectly with the rest of the display's dark color scheme, much less radical than the XB253Q. The Predator logo is proudly displayed on the bottom edge between these RGB strips, along with the Gsync and Agilesplendor IPS stickers.

You can see the Predator logo on the top of the stand, alongside the Acer logo on the back of the monitor on a brushed aluminum background. Except for the headphone mount and cable management hole, the back of the mount is designed in black, which is pretty straightforward. The bracket can be removed from the panel using the quick release button; the VESA 100 x 100 bracket is exposed.

When it comes to build quality, XB273U seems to have checked a lot of correct boxes. In other words, there are some obvious flaws.

On the bright side, the screen generally feels well made and robust. We ran some robustness tests on the panel itself and found no squeak. Users have all the commonly used adjustment options in the OSD, including colors, images, and game functions. Game features include Adaptivesync, Overdrive, VRB, and ultra-low latency settings, allowing you to fine-tune your gaming experience to your exact requirements. We will discuss the best OSD settings for gaming performance in more detail later in this article. The

OSD is controlled by the 5-way joystick located at the bottom right corner (rear) of the display. Above, users will also find four quick control buttons that can be used to change brightness, input signal or power. After finding the perfect settings, you can also choose to save the settings to the onboard memory and provide three configuration files.

Excellent colors and excellent image quality are the two main factors that help you create a sense of immersion in the game. In this case, gaming monitors don't always calibrate colors to be considered accurate across some color spectrum, such as sRGB / Rec.709.

For this reason, we like to test the color reproduction of each monitor we review to understand how they perform in a 0 scene with color accuracy.

The results are as follows.

As always, we run a preliminary "out of the box" color test to see how accurate existing colors are. For this monitor, the color temperature is set to warm, the brightness is approximately 300 nits (higher than the recommended value for daytime viewing), and adaptive sync is "on." The quick color test returns a white balance of 6879K and a depth of black of 0.12. The contrast ratio is slightly lower than the advertised 1000: 1 (924: 1), and the average deltaE is 2.42 - poor for most color-accurate work situations.

We switched to the built-in sRGB preset, hoping for better results right away. Interestingly, the white balance measured in this test is 7535K, much higher than the white balance we usually experience at sRGB presets. The depth of black is 0.133 and the contrast ratio is 915: 1. The average deltaE for this preset is 1.33; this is not the best we have seen, but it is also not the worst. Gamma reached 2.32, higher than the ideal 2.2. The

XB273U also comes with many other built-in presets, including DCIP3 presets. We measured it in a shorter test format, and the results provided what we thought was below average. The white balance is good, but the depth of black has increased to 0.375. The contrast is further reduced, and the average deltaE returns to 2.26. In other words, the DCIP3 color space manages to provide a richer color experience, which many users will like.

Finally, we did a quick test using the "normal" color temperature. As you can see, the results were unexpected again. The white balance is below the ideal value of 6500K, but the black depth measurement is as low as 0.10. The contrast ratio is higher than the advertised 1000:1 (1107:1), and the average deltaE is 2.43, a record low.

We quickly calibrated the monitor (using the user's color temperature) to see the accuracy of the Acer Predator XB273U. For best results, we change the RGB value to 45/46/51 and run the calibration. After the

calibration was completed, we performed a more in-depth color test using the sRGB spectrum to see the accuracy of the new profile. It can be seen from the above results that the color accuracy of the display has improved a lot after doing so. We measured a white balance of 6529K and a black depth of 0.12. The contrast is still lower than the advertised 1000:1 (987:1), but the difference is not much. However, the most impressive is the deltaE in the middle, which drops sharply to 0.27. The maximum deltaE is still a bit high at 1.54, but it is still within the "perceivable" range of the human eye. The

panel uniformity is a test we ran to check the uniformity of brightness and color on the screen. During this test, the central square was used as the reference space. Then test all other squares to see how far it differs from the reference value.

In an ideal world, we want all the squares to be green, which means that it does not break the differential threshold, which we can set at the beginning of the test.

In terms of panel uniformity, XB273U performed very well. As can be seen from the above figure, almost every quadrant in our test returned a green score, with a deviation of less than 5 from the baseline quadrant. This is ideal for viewing content

As part of the calibration process, DisplayCal can provide accurate color measurement. The following are the test color gamut results:

Judging from the color accuracy results, the XB273U provides a wide color gamut, providing up to 99.8% of the sRGB color spectrum. The total color gamut of this monitor far exceeds the sRGB space, reaching 143.7%, equivalent to 99 RGB obe and 101.8 ip3. Surprisingly, the XB273U actually provides 96.4% DCIP3 coverage, which exceeds some professional editing monitors. That being said, you must calibrate the monitor here to get the best results.

If you look at the picture above, you can see where the color gamut of XB273U exceeds the sRGB space (as shown by the dotted line). Except for the blue/purple area, it provides a wider color gamut in almost all areas. The monitor is considered very accurate after calibration. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who needs a game panel that can be edited to an accurate level.

We completed the image quality and color accuracy test by checking the maximum brightness, minimum brightness, and 120 candlelight points on this panel. The results are as follows:

is not affected. It is time to let Predator XB273U experience a variety of different game scenarios to see how it performs in terms of pixel response, input delay and HDR content. Since this is Acer's high-end gaming line, I only hope it has the best gaming experience. This is the result.

Before we begin, we enable the maximum refresh rate (165Hz) in the GPU control panel. We also enabled adaptive sync (Gsync), set Overdrive to normal, and set ultra-low latency to "on."

I started playing CS: GO which is a fast paced shooter that challenges pixel response time and monitor refresh rate. The last monitor we tested was the XB253Q, a 1080p variant in this vein, so it will be interesting to see how the two compare. When loading CounterStrike, the first thing I noticed is that the frame rate dropped compared to XB253Q. The 1440p screen resolution provided by this monitor causes a serious performance loss on your device, so if you use it as your next panel, keep this in mind. Fortunately, CS: GO is a very well optimized game and allows me to get 165 frames per second, matching the monitor refresh rate. The overall gameplay feels very smooth, with almost no blur in the most intense battle scenes. Thanks to the fast pixel response time and low input latency, the XB273U allows you to really focus on the game more clearly, giving me a physical advantage over some of my competitors. I played with a lot of overload settings, medium provides the best balance between image quality and responsiveness. Climbing the theoretical ladder of speeding will produce a considerable amount of overshoot, which is a screen artifact that will cause whitening around the object as it moves.

I decided to post some more immersive single player games below to see how fair the less responsive games are. Games like Shadow of the Tomb and Battlefield V look very exciting. The 1440p screen resolution, coupled with the monitor's wide color gamut and tear-free images, provides an extremely immersive experience to a large extent. I would say that the RGB light in front of the monitor really started to bother me after a while, especially when I was walking through dark jungles or caves, so it turned off very abruptly. However, in terms of performance, it is difficult to draw attention to this monitor if you want to be honest. I turned on HDR to see what kind of benefits the game will experience, but the VESA HDR400 certification doesn't really provide that much. Like all the monitors we tested, the VESA HDR400 is a basic certification that only slightly enhances details in extremely bright and extremely dark areas. I didn't experience too many ghost images when playing games on this monitor, nor did I experience any screen tearing, thanks to VRR support. This monitor supports FreeSync GPU, but Nvidia GSync is

. Finally, when comparing XB253Q to XB273U, the jump from 144Hz to 165Hz is far from the case. However, what I mean is that there is a significant difference in the overall image quality of the two panels.

So there you have it, our full review of the Acer Predator XB273U, a high-performance gaming monitor that delivers astonishing image clarity and excellent response. The only question that needs to be answered is whether we think the XB273U is worth the money; this is a difficult prospect considering its rather high price of $ 499.

Let's look at the bright side. XB273U is a 1440p gaming monitor with a powerful 165Hz IPS panel at its core. Not only does this make it well suited for gaming, it also makes it well suited for productivity and color-accurate work. Of course, you may need to use a colorimeter to get the best results from this monitor, but if you're willing to spend the extra money, you really can get the best of both worlds. Or, for just $ 499, the XB273U falls into a fairly competitive price bracket, making it directly competitive with some market-leading 27-inch panels.
